Getting Started

You can create a new shelf by clicking "Add" under the shelf category.  Once a shelf is set up you can begin adding your items by clicking "Add Items".  There are 3 ways to instantly add your items.

1. Click "Add Item" and then click "ISBN/UPC" enter the entire UPC code (ISBN number for books).  Dashes and spaces are not necessary.  Click "store".

Example- UPC code for games, music, movies, and books

enter as:     074470034629

Example- ISBN number for books

enter as:

905584067x
OR
9789055840670

When the UPC/ISBN codes are recognized, the item will be automatically uploaded to your library and into your specified shelf.  Confirm the item and continue entering the next item.

or

2.  After clicking "Add Item", click "Search Title" and enter keywords such as title or author name etc.  Select from the resulting list that best describes your item and click "save".   You may either continue the next search by keywords or close the window and continue entering with UPC/ISBN numbers.

3.  After clicking "Add Item", click "Import" You can then input a file containing the ISBN or UPC or ASIN code separated by a new line. If you already own any PC/MAC based cataloging tools and it has an ability to export your collection as an XML file, then GuruLib can import from that file.

Click "Goto Library" to return to your main library screen.  Click on the images to view item details.  You can move your items to a different shelf by clicking on "Move To" button within the item details screen.  You can also search within the self by clicking on the genre, author, actors, etc links.

Q: How do I add titles to my library?
A:
Log on to your GuruLib account. In the main library page click on Add Item button at the top. On the subsequent page that opens. You will be presented with several options for adding titles to your library.

  • Search Title: You may enter part of the title to search for a book, movie, music, games and software.
  • UPC/ISBN: If you can find the UPC/ISBN code normally found at the back cover of the book/movie use this option.
  • Import: If you already have another cataloging tool, then export your library into a csv or some textual format. Now use this option to select the exported file. GuruLib will import all titles in the exported file that has an ISBN/UPC or ASIN (Amazon indexing scheme).
  • Manual: Use this option if the book, movie, music, game or software is not available in any online catalog.
  • Camera: You can upload a picture of the barcode to GuruLib from your webcam or cell phone. GuruLib will automatically decode ISBN/UPC code from the barcode picture and add that to your catalog.

On the top right hand side of this page you have options to select the Shelf, Catalog Source. Shelf indicates the physical location of your item. Catalog Source indicates, online database from which GuruLib should fetch cataloging information. Currently, you can select from either the 6 Amazon websites (USA, UK, DE, FR, CA, JP) or from over 530 public libraries that are accessible through Z39.50 public library access network. The public libraries support searching multiple libraries in one search operation.

Q: Setting up your webcam as barcode reader
    A:
GuruLib webcam barcode reader will only read UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes. You can find more information about UPC-A and EAN-13 barcodes here. We did our testing mostly with Philips SPC325NC webcam.
    Setting up your webcam

  • Webcam barcode reader works best with a uniform lighting in the room. Make sure that you don't have any light blaring on the webcam. Sometimes webcam's come with a small LED on them to indicate activity. The glossy finish on the book or barcode may causes LED light to be reflect of the barcode thereby blurring it. You could try tilting the book or DVD a bit to correct this
  • Adjust your webcam's manual focus to be sharp an objects approxmately 2 to 3 inches from the webcam
  • Slowly bring the book or DVD with the barcode in front of the webcam until you can see the entire barcode in focus. Make sure that the barcode is vertical. If you have a book with two barcodes seperated by space as shown below, you only need to bring the highlighted section in front of the webcam

Q: How can I add titles to my catalog from my cell phone?
    A:
Please check the following blog entry for more information about adding titles through cell phone

Q: Why doesn't GuruLib retrieve images for some of my titles?
    A:
GuruLib is programmed to search into the world wide web for images and details from the UPC/ISBN numbers you provide.  To save space and to increase request response the internet may no longer provide images for dated materials or materials no longer in print.  In this case, you may have the option to add your own images manually.

Q: How do I add items which can not be found by using either the UPC/ISBN code or keyword search?
    A:
GuruLib has also provided a manual entry feature for such cases.  Simply click "manual entry" and fill in the details.

Q: How can my friends access my Library?
    A:
Others can only see your public shelf. You can change the settings for a shelf by clicking on the "Edit" link near to the shelf banner on the upper left hand corner of your main library page. You and your friends can then access your library on the web at http://www.gurulib.com/username.
for e.g. My username for GuruLib is coolabcgirl, my friends can see my collection at www.gurulib.com/coolabcgirl

Q: What is borrowed shelf, wish list shelf, recommendation shelf and trash can shelf?

    A:
Borrowed Shelf: When you borrow an item from another GuruLib account, that item will automatically placed in the borrowed shelf. However, items that you loaned out to others, will remain in its current location. A tag, located on the top right corner, will appear showing the item status as either "Out" or "Late". Below is an example showing the loaned out tags.

Wish List Shelf: Items placed in the wish list shelf are not counted as part of your library. This shelf is an easy way to maintain your wish list and allows friends and family access to your current wish list any time. Items that can be added to this limit is currently limited to Amazon.com.

Recommendation Shelf: Items in recommendation shelf are generated by GuruLib recommendation engine. Recommendation engine uses the ratings that you provided for items in your shelves. In addition, it also takes into account items in your wish list. Putting it very simple, if you gave an item 5 star rating GuruLib recommendation engine recommends titles similar to that. Instead if you gave a lower rating, GuruLib picks less items matching that. If you do not want to include a book, movie, music, game, or software for recommendation engine's consideration do not rate them.
GuruLib recommendation engine also predicts your reading preference and give a rating for items in your recommendation engine. If an item in your recommendation has a higher star rating, GuruLib recommendation engine feel you might like that book, movie, music, game, or software.

Trash Can: Items placed in trash can are not counted as part of your library. This shelf is the first step in permanently removing items from your library. To permanently remove an item from your library first the item is moved to the trash can. To move items to trash can you can either drag an item in thumbnail view or if you are in the item information page you can click on the shelf to move the item to the trash can shelf. Once items are in trash can you can permanently remove them by clicking on the "Empty Trash Can" button at the top.

Q: Why is the recommendation shelf not visible?
    A:
Recommendation shelf will only become visible if you have rated any book/movie/music/game or software in your library or added book/movie/music/games and software to the wish list. All items in the wish list are assumed to have 5 star rating. Normally the recommendation algorithm requires a day to analyze your preference and provide suggestions. So if you have rated your items or added items to wish list before 2:00 AM CST, chances are that your recommendations will be generated the following day.
