In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. This is a great book! Written by Jon Krakauer, the journalist who recorded the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster in Into Thin Air, Into The Wild is a fascinating and poignant account of the events that led young Chris McCandless to his death in the Alaskan wilderness. More than just a tale of raw adventure, Into the Wild is filled with stories from people, including family members, who knew McCandless during his final years. In addition, Krakauer weaves quotes from McCandless' literary heroes into the story, helping to shed light on the kind of experience McCandless sought when he embarked on his travels across the United States; Krakauer does a great job humanizing a man who many thought was downright crazy. Whether you're looking for adventure, mystery, relational conflict, or history, this book has it all!
